AI search engines don't cite sources the same way. Each engine has its own bias toward or against its own ecosystem, independent publishers, forums like Reddit, YouTube, and Wikipedia. Understanding these patterns tells you where to invest so your content actually shows up in answers, rather than treating "AI visibility" as one undifferentiated target.
Why citation behavior differs by engine
Every AI search engine draws on a different underlying index and a different set of preferences about which sources to trust and surface. Some engines favor their own ecosystem; others reach widely into independent publishers. The result is that the same query can produce very different cited sources depending on where a user asks it.
This matters because "getting cited" is not a single goal. A page that performs well in one engine may be invisible in another. Knowing each engine's tendencies lets you target your effort instead of spreading it thin. For the mechanics behind these decisions, see How LLMs Choose Citations.
The citation landscape at a glance
The table below summarizes how five major engines behave across common source types.
| Engine | Cites own ecosystem | Cites independent publishers | Cites Reddit/forums | Cites YouTube | Cites Wikipedia |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | Low | High (Bing top 10 heavy) | Medium-High | Low (transcripts only) | High |
| Claude | Low | Medium-High | Medium | Very Low | High |
| Perplexity | None | Very High (most diverse) | High | Medium | High |
| Gemini / AI Mode | Heavy YouTube, Maps, Shopping | Medium | Medium | Very High | Very High |
| Google AI Overviews | Heavy Google properties | Medium-High | High | High | High |
A few patterns stand out:
- Perplexity cites no ecosystem of its own and pulls the most diverse set of independent publishers. It's the engine where strong independent content has the clearest path in.
- ChatGPT Search leans heavily on Bing's top results and cites independent publishers highly, but treats YouTube mostly as transcript text rather than as a primary source.
- Claude is similar to ChatGPT on publishers and Wikipedia but is the weakest on YouTube of any engine listed.
- Gemini / AI Mode and Google AI Overviews both favor Google's own properties — YouTube, Maps, Shopping — and cite Wikipedia very heavily.
The Reddit factor
Google's reported $60M/year Reddit data deal, signed in 2024, has a large practical effect: Reddit threads are now heavily over-represented in AI Overviews and Gemini. For commercial queries — something like "best CRM for solo founders" — there is almost always a Reddit thread among the cited sources.
The implication is not to spam Reddit. It's to build a genuine presence in the subreddits that matter for your category — participating in discussions, answering questions, and contributing content that real communities find useful. Because Reddit already scores Medium-High to High across most engines, that presence can pay off beyond Google's properties too.
What each engine rewards
Different engines reward different content investments. Mapping your format to your target engine avoids wasted effort.
Independent publishing
If your priority is Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, or Claude, focus on strong independent content on your own site. These engines pull heavily from independent publishers and don't tilt toward any proprietary ecosystem. The work here overlaps directly with What Makes Content Citable and Content Patterns LLMs Favor.
Video
YouTube is a Very High citation source for Gemini and a High one for Google AI Overviews, but Very Low for Claude and only transcript-level for ChatGPT Search. If Google's answer surfaces are your target, video is worth producing. If Claude is your priority, it isn't.
Forums and community
Reddit and forum content ranges from Medium to High across engines, and is strongest inside Google's surfaces because of the data deal. Genuine community participation is the play here.
Wikipedia and entities
Wikipedia is cited High or Very High by every engine in the table. That makes entity presence broadly valuable, no matter which engine you're optimizing for. To understand how engines connect your brand to a recognized entity, see Entities & the Knowledge Graph.
Crawler reads
- HTML markup
- Plain text

Agent drives

Turning this into a strategy
Because no single tactic wins everywhere, decide which engines matter most for your audience, then weight your effort accordingly:
- Broad independent visibility — invest in citable on-site content that performs across Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Claude.
- Google surfaces (AI Overviews, Gemini) — add YouTube video and a real Reddit presence on top of your on-site work.
- Everywhere — maintain accurate entity signals, including Wikipedia where you qualify.
These choices sit inside the wider practice of AEO & GEO, and they build on the same foundations as traditional search. For how the two disciplines relate, see SEO vs AEO: Where They Align and Where They Diverge. To learn more about the engines themselves, see AI Search Engines.
What to do
- Decide which engines matter most for your audience and rank them in priority order.
- Build strong, citable independent content on your own site to reach Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Claude.
- If Google's AI Overviews or Gemini are a priority, produce YouTube video content, which those engines cite heavily.
- Establish a genuine Reddit presence in subreddits relevant to your category — participate, don't spam — to capture the Reddit citations common in Google's surfaces.
- Secure and maintain accurate entity signals, including a Wikipedia presence where you qualify, since Wikipedia is cited across every engine.
- For commercial queries in your category, check which Reddit threads currently get cited and contribute usefully to those conversations.
